Default New Owner - Windlass question

Just purchased a 1999 Z280 with a Simpson Lawerence Sprint 500 windlass. The windlass works fine in the down position. It lifts the anchor fine until the splice where the anchor line is attached to the chain. It then just slips in the gypsy. If I help it thru then the chain begins to bunch up. ANYONE have a similar issue and found a fix?
