here is a picture of the back side of my control box on... Well sort this image is off the net. You can see the two cable holes and then multiple linkage attachment points.

When I pulled my cable off there was one cable on the upper nearest mounting point and one on the lower outer.

there control appears to be a mercruiser commander classic 3000

Looks to me like if you just switch them from say the right side in the pic to the left side , it would change the direction of the shift pattern Lucky.

Swapped them and the prop now rotates clockwise in forward as viewed from stern and then counter in reverse.. Which seems to be right.. But the boat dies after start up after 3 seconds or so even in neutral... Which was bad enough

Then it was hard to start.. Excessive cranking... Shot of throttle clean didn't help so I thing it was ignition or natural cut out... And then it gets worse..... Then the starter went out... Spins but the motor doesn't turn over and doesn't sound like the starter is engaging the flywheel. So I couldn't continue To fault trace it. I spun the nine over by hand and still no change but it oes spin...

I picks up a new mercruiser marine starter... Any thoughts

Man , you got luck like me!
Might take a look at the shift interrupt switch on the motor side to make sure it's working.

I don't believe his Bravo outdrive has an interrupt switch. Is the ignition kill switch on the shifter operating correctly?

    RE starter motor
Inside the motor head there are 3 small gears that run inside a ring, these gears are made of a plastic/nylon type material. chances are you've stripped the gear teeth.

My buddy has a 238 and his daughter accidently pushed the kill switch on the front lower corner of the gear shift/throttle control unit. His boat would start up and then stall. After he checked everything 10 times he finally found it was that little switch. It fired right up and ran fine.

You mean the run/kill switch in front of the throttle?

I messed with that thinking I had accidently pushed it. It is in the "up position" which I think is run.

I will be putting a starter in on Sunday. I hope that it just the bendix sticking or that the pinion is shot without damaging the starter and not the ring gear on the flywheel.

I think I will be good that mainly because there wasn't the normal sound of mechanical mayhem with teeth being pulled off their casting when it stopped spinning and that its a sierra labeled starter with some corrosion on the end part of the case. So I am hoping it is bad by way of being a cheapo part and water fouled.

If so and I still have a stall issue I will look adjusting the interrupt switch on the gear linkage on the starboard riser.

Are there any other interrupt switches? I thought I had an Alpha how do I tell?

Then I hope its all good for a its first outing as season winds down here in VA.
