The button on the throttle lever to disengage the outdrive so you can just operate throttle is stuck. The button will move free but will not engage outdrive. Is this serviceable or is it all sealed and I have to replace the entire unit? Thanks.

Almost all shifter/throttle controllers are serviceable. When u press the button it simply disconnects the shifter cable inside the controller itself while the throttle cable remains connected. When the lever is moved back neutral it re-engages the shift cable. A picture or model number would help narrow down a schematic of the way throttle controller is assembled. Now that being said, it may just be sticking, something a little WD 40 and working the lever and button back and forth might cure, but if u use WD to get it loose, u still need to get some more permanent lube(grease) back inside the controller or u will be asking for more wear and tear on the unit. There should be a parts diagram in the manuals section or if u have the model number u can google a diagram.

It is the quicksilver 3000. I sprayed lubricant where I thought it would help and moved lever back and forth with no luck. Even bumped the button slightly.

There is a parts diagram and parts list of the Quicksilver3000 in a thread started by crogers. If u use the search forum tool at the top of the page and type in Quicksilver3000 it will bring up the posts on it. Or u could search posts by crogers. Hope that helps

I had a similar problem with a previous boat that had the same Quicksilver shift lever. The plastic button has a snap featurethat is tough to get out without breaking. Best bet is to order a new button and use a screw driver to pry the old one out which will probably break as you pry it. Once the button is out you can remove the nut that holds the shift lever to the mechanism and open it up to clean/lube it.

I got the button out without breaking the tabs and took the lever out and I can not see how the button latches to anything. I even took the back plate off and I couldnt learn anything new.

Hi Easy Nine,

I have a 95 Z202 with that same shifter. I just had the whole thing replaced. New control box with Gen II cables. I haven't had it out on the water yet, but I am excited. That Merc. 3000 shifter is a pile of crap. Merc only used it for a couple years I'm told. The new shifter is all metal and the Gen II cables are a plastic combination for easier operation. The parts were about $400 and the labor was $400. If you can do the job yourself you could have a whole new installation for $400.

To me the throttle is the heart of the boat. If it's a problem, your whole boat is a problem. It also makes it much easier for less experienced drivers to operate it say if you want to ski etc.

I also rebuilt my quadrajet carb. last fall. The marina wanted 4 to 5 hundred. I did it for $25, the price of a carb kit. The accelerator pump alone has made a world of difference. Good luck and let me know how it comes out.

If I remember correctly, the plastic shaft of the Throttle only button pushes against a spring loaded throttle only shaft. When the throttle only shaft is pushed in it alows the throttle lever to operate without engaging the shift lever/cable. A spring returns the shaft to its normal position when the throttle is returned back to the idle/neutral position. Chances are you got some dust/dirt/water/salt water between the shaft and the bore or the old lube just dried up and got sticky. It just needs to be lubed/cleaned and operated back and forth a few times to free it up. I used a small screw driver and a small pair of needle nose pliers to push and pull on the shaft loosening it up while spraying WD-40 over and over. Once it was completely loose I sprayed some white lube in there for long term lubrication. Did this just once and never had a problem again.
