Ummm... unless i am missing something that's precisely how its supposed to work. The trim button on the throttle should only take it up part way while the trailer switch should lift it up completely for trailering.

Shouldnt the stick take it all the way up as well? Only going half way up doesnt make sense to me. Is a safety thing for the out drive?

Exactly... it's a safety limit for the outdrive. The Mercruiser manual states that if you 'tilt' it up beyond the upper 'trim' limit to keep the rpm's under 1500.

Although only "half-way" up seems more limited than usual.

Take a look at this to see if your trim limit swich and/or sender is adjusted correctly:

As Chaddy noted, that is a safety feature. The trim up button is wired thru the Trim Limit Switch on the outdrive and on thru a solenoid to the Trim motor so that you can't inadvertently trim the drive up too far while underway.

is there not a "trailering" button on the dash that will take the drive all the way up as well ? my 302 has one.

The tilt button on that control is just behind the throttle. It's a recessed button on the lower rear corner.

It's hard to see, so I can understand you not seeing it.

My Trailer trim button is about a 1 inch square that is lower down on the throttle stick.
