Default Shifter won't shift out of neutral

Have a 20' 2001, not sure what model. Has a single arm shifter with a button that is depressed to shift out of neutral for both forward and reverse. Will not shift out of neutral. Any suggestions? Thx.

First thought is the button part is broken or not disengaging the lock for some reason. Other possibility is the cable is stuck and not allowing it to shift, could be problem in the outdrive unit also.

Was it working before and not it is not?

Yes, it was working fine all summer until now. Should I take the cover plate off and see if something is stuck or just have a mechanic come out. Thanks.

Do a quick search on google or youtube to see if you can find the same model and how they come apart. Could be a simple fix like a broken spring or something.
