A little update: I ordered wear rings. They are the same size as the original one. I'll put them on with some red loctite when I finish the trailer brakes.

    Moto ,
When you get the job completed , how about a write up and some pics.
I'm sure members/owners would like to see the process.
Maybe do it as a maintenance/project type thing.

I'm keeping that in mind. I have been keeping photos. In my opinion this is a pretty interesting topic seeing as these boats are getting older. I like that fact. Having something classy that's older in great condition is super cool to me. A trailer gets your pride an joy to the water, it needs maintained as well!

Here is a little update on my lovely trailer. What started out as a DIY update the brakes and put in new bearings/seals has turned into two new torsion axles. Long story short I found the rubber in my axles is tired and not up to the task of supporting my 4500lb vessel. The axles not only have memory but bottom out allowing my tires to rub the wheel wells. I have 205/75 R14 tires, not sure what Prestige came with but the tire size is NOT the problem. Ill just post a few interesting things I have discovered along the way...
The inside hub seal is 1.68" on these Reliable brand torsion axles NOT 1.719. If you do work to your Prestige trailer get the correct size seal and make sure it has a double lip. This incorrect seal size is the reason my drum brakes kept getting grease on them making them not work- except for one brake that somehow ended up with a 1.68 seal. I have no idea how that happened.
The one working brake managed to get so hot driving to Lake Powell that it blew a tire! It also made the rubber in the torsion axle very hot. The axle now has to be replaced.
Since I have had this trailer I have had to creep over every little dip and grade change- even with a 5" drop hitch. The outdrive/gimbal ring damage that happened to the boat was due to this lowrider trailer.
Prestige had a flaw with a number of their trailers- mine is one of them. They cut square openings for brake lines. These square openings get fractures in their corners. (they phased out that square hole by using a round hole that eliminated the fractures).

So here is where I am at now: Trying to find new axles for a reasonable price. Ive looking into Dexter, Flexiride, ALKO, and UFP. They are going to have to be custom made seeing as these trailers are an odd size. The prices I have gotten so far are pretty steep. All are in the $1200 region and that is without shipping.

Anyone know of a place to order axles from?
Pacifictrailer.com and McClain Trailers are the two places Im able to get the UFP stuff from. Kinda partial to the UFP- they have replaceable trailing arms and decent reviews. Still open to ideas.

I have a trailer fabrication shop near by, thankfully. I got a respectable quote from them for the metal work and labor.

You can see the rear axle sits up a little more than the front. When there is weight on it the difference is much more noticeable. The driver side is even. Damage from the heat is causing the passenger side to sag.

Something I forgot to mention in the previous post involves the damage to the spindles. They are toast. Striped threads on the passenger side and barely any threads on one of the drivers side. Not safe. At one point someone did a quick blow-and-go job on them. Now I get to replace them.

Would it be more economical to buy a new one? I bought a brand new trailer when I bout my 272 in 2010 for around 3200 set up with electric brakes ready to roll. Just might be cheaper and less hassle... IMO

I have considered that. I've looked at a few places. Only got one price so far- $4200. It was aluminum though. Don't need that here. Where can I find a decent steel?

I had a load rite aluminum with my 272. Whats wrong with aluminum? Have you looked at Craigslist or ebay? Mite not hurt to call some marinas/ dealers and see if they have any left over trailers.
