Finally found the high pitch engine whine/squeal buggin me for as year. Turned out to be the joint between the intake manifold and the carb. I rebuilt the carb over the winter and it even had a new gasket. Found it by placing a small rag (mashed donw hard by hand) incrementally around the intake to block then intake to carb joints. Once I got by the carb the sound almost instantly disappeared. Pulled the carb, small bead of RTV, bolted it back down and QUIET. So nice to hear the motor run. Once I got the seat and sunpad back down you cant even hear the engine. SOOOOO nice. Hope this helps. Key search words: whine squeal whistle loud noise

Just a word of advise, never use any kind of RTV on a connection between the carb and manifold. A new gasket should do the trick. Gas can disolve the RTV and gum up your carb. Also the high amount of vacuum that was making your whistling noise you were hearing can suck in the RTV causing the same problem. One other note, if you have this problem again and can't find the leak use a spry bottle with water in it to check for vacuum leaks around the manifold and carb. If it is indeed and vacuum leak and the engine is running it with cause the engine to run rough for just a second. This is an old trick us mechanics use. You may not have a problem with the RTV but if you do it will be much harder to clean out.

Thanks for the advice. The bead I used was less than 1/16" dia and I let it "skin" over first to ensure it didn't get in the carb or near the fuel area. I had a new gasket and it still leaked! Taking it on the water both days this weekend to double check.
