1. 5.0L mercury is a solid motor. Is it carbed or fuel injected?
2. Regular octane 87 should be good. No need for anything more, unless you are experiencing detonation, which is unlikely.
3. Have them do a good inspection of the bellows, shift linkgage etc. They probably will lube the gimbals for you as well.
4. I use Meguirs flagship marine wax. It's good stuff. Don't forget the interior; I would also put some vinyl conditioner/protectant on the upholstery.

    1. I believe the 305 (5.0L) is carbed, or at least that was the most common setup with that engine. You could have an hour meter, it might be installed on the engine itself. But if you don't, you could have one installed, it's not a terribly necessary part.
    2. 87 Octane is what Mercruiser recommends, however on the water, you might only be able to find 89 Octane. Won't hurt anything but the pocketbook!
    3. I would have them run a full inspection on it, possibly a compression test and definitely check your seals, bellows, & linkages.
    4. I second the Meguiars Flagship Wax, they make a wash too that's great. Check out their New Boat Owners Kit, it contains the wash, wax, an applicator & a spray cleaner for quick cleaning. Plus it runs about $30 at the local marine supply store!

Hi Mivy.....also, if you want really clean seats etc, try using Mr. Clean magic erasers. They work great. Once done, use a vinyl protectorant as Z202 said.

I agree with everything ShabahZ250 says......even if he does prefer Bayliners.

Mivy - your mechanic should be able to hook a computer up and see what the hours are (at least if it's MerCruiser - don't know about Volvo). It would be useful info to have - kinda like buying a car without an odometer.

Post some pics! I'm interested in seeing it! Sounds like a great boat.
