Default Rattle from engine

Well thats the boating season about over for this year in Scotland, its almost been a total washout with only a few dry weekends to go out and play. Most of the boats here which are moored in inland lochs(lakes) come out this or next weekend so not a lot of time left to play BUT my 2004 sx18 with a mercriuser 3L has developed an awfull rattle it started about 40mph but now rattles about 25mph I dont have a clue about engines but know a few guys who do but I would like a few pointers if anyone has any suggestions they are most welcome

    Hi Andy,

The first thought to come to mind is rod knock (bad crank bearing), but I would like to get a little more information first...

Can you isolate the rattle to a particular area of the motor:
    • Under the valve cover
    • From the oil pan
    • Near the front
    • Near the back
    • Etc...

Also, are we sure the sound is coming from the motor and not:
    • Bell housing
    • Transom
    • Outdrive
    • When going straight
    • When turning

Lastly, have you checked your motor's oil level and oil pressure lately?
