bad news could be good news..... boat sat outside at the upholster shop uncovered while getting the engine hatch and back seat redon. uncovered, while there we had 2 weeks worth of flooding rain. any way make a long story short, black mercruiser cover over the carb had a crack in it creating a funnel which filled #5 and #8 cyl with water. yeah yeah yeah broke a tooth off the flywheel. so now i have a decision to make. while i have the motor out to replace flywheel.
    1. just replace flywheel and call it good.
    2. replace flywheel and put some compression in the motor with a mild marine cam, flat top pistons and some good valve springs
i dont want anything radical just something that will sound and run strong!
seems pointless to have the motor out in front of me without doing some well needed mods.....
    any input?

I'm always leary of water in cylinders. Is the shop going to reimburse you for repairs?
I'm pretty sure I'd be pissed off if it were my boat

    When in doubt........build it!

i wont ask him for reimbursement. it was a "bargain" of a deal. and it was as much my fault as anyones. i should have put a trash bag over the breather. cant cry over it now, whats done is done. i just have to worry with fixing the situation. i have priced all the parts on ebay, i know i can do a little better after i tear it down and see what i have, the parts for cam lifters springs pistons rings all the bearings the good 1pc rubber gasket and rebuild gasket set oil pump roller timing set..all parts for the motor not counting my labor is a little over $600. i think if i can justify it to my lovely bride its a done deal......

10-1 comp. 262xtreme cam 110#valve springs. and a dual plane performer intake that i already have. i think i have talked myself into it.

pulling the motor out on monday.

ok, here is whats going on now. i have traded around and picked up a roller vortec 350. so friday morning when i get off work i will replace the flywheel on the motor in the boat. then i will focus on tearing the roller motor down and take the block to machine shop for bore hone and deck the block. decisions to make are whether or not go 383 or just stick with the 350 with around 10-1 comp.
question i have is how much hp will the alpha outdrive handle? i dont want to tear anything up. another question is what is a recomendation on size of cam to run. since its roller my knowledge is slim especially on marine application. any input is greatly appreciated

For my money it'd be 383 all day long. You can buy an eagle cast steel crank for about 200, keep your 5.7 rods, and you're buying pistons anyway. The difference won't be enough to bother the outdrive. The biggest gain you'll see is in bottom end torque. As far as camshafts....I'm very partial to anything Lunati. I installed hundreds of them and can honestly say I never had a complaint. Easiest thing to do is pick a cam company and call their tech line. They're usually very helpful.

The Alpha drive is rated at 300 hp , but.....There are quite few people running in the 350 hp range with no adverse issues.

YOu can have all the HP you want. What burns up drives is the force you put to them. So running a HUGE prop and hammering that gas every time you take off will take it out even with a stock motor.

I was always told "Get the boat on plane as smoothly as you can, then go for it"

That and I have grown pretty fond of the drive shower idea. Keep the oil cool and it will not break down as fast keeping things out back operating smooth.

Oregon turned me onto the Rex Marine shower. It is one of the more expensive ones but looks the best and functions like you would expect a shower to. My next overtime shift is going to one...
