I have been thinking about this for the last week and can not seem to come up with a good awnser.
My boat was damaged on both sides by what I think was fender panels that had bad carpet/screws sticking out.
The previous owner used some sort of epoxy on the scratches , but boy it looks like crap!
I want to remove this yellow layer of epoxy(as seen in pics), and redo with white Marine Tex.
Anyone got any ideas how to remove or maybe have removed this kind of stuff before?
I am thinking using scotch green roloc pads on it , but I don't want to get to deep removing the old epoxy.

Chances are that you'll end up sanding that epoxy down to the gelcoat, wet sand and polish. Clean out the scratches out with a diegrinder to do a proper bonding repair. Since it yellowed, I'm thinking it's a general purpose epoxy not marine grade. But you could try warming the epoxy with a hair dryer and using a razorblade scraper to get under it and cut / peel off what you can. You could use a heat gun but be careful you don't overheat the area.
Utube has lots of gelcoat repair vids to give you other ideas.

Worked on Port side gouges today.(Smaller of the two pics) Will take pic to show result tomarrow. The heat gun really did the trick removing that old epoxy.

Well , I'm highly impressed. The repair went very well I think. Took some time but I think it came out awesome. Need to wet sand some more and use some xxxx fine steel wool on it but here is the result so far.
I'll let everyone know how the port side comes out. The Marinetex is the greatest stuff since sliced bread!

I'm glad you was able to get that stuff off. Show's how good of bond that really was. Makes me wonder why people would even try a repair with the wrong material in the first place. It's a poor repair and just makes a bigger mess to clean up. Good job

Yeah , it came right off with a little heat. Great suggestion. Some people are just flat lazy or don't care as long as it will float. Can't live that way..... I'm bad about keeping my boat as pristine as possible.

I finished up the Starboard side gouge yesterday. Been removing oxidation for the last three days. Slow process but everyday she looks better and better.
Here is a pic of the finished repair , just some more buffing cleaning and final wax needed.
