Sorry, but I've tried to find any threads/posts referring to the flipping the brackets for the gas struts, but I'm not having much luck either...
From what I know of the typical gas strut mounting brackets, you can't flip the upper brackets and if your able to flip the lower one, it would probibly give you only an inch at the most as they are normally triangular in shape with a small peg to mount the strut on.

Your options would be to relocate your existing brackets to allow the hatch to open more or to install a longer strut. Just be careful that you make sure you have enough distance between the brackets when the hatch is closed for the length of the strut your using or you'll end up jamming the brackets into the strut and no telling what damage that will create.
Is it possible you saw a post about the brackets for the electric/hydraulic lifts or moving the brackets for more clearance?
