Default 7.4 low idle problem

I have a 1995 Talari 240 with a 7.4. engine will run great on muffs and in the water for the first 15 minutes. After engine is up to temperature anytime I bring it back to idle it will load up and die. Here is what I have done so far; fuel in tank is good,, changed water separator, added in line fuel filter and last week end I rebuilt the carburetor. The carb defiantly needed cleaning & I was sure that a new kit would fix the problem. Took it to the water yesterday & ran great again for the first 15 mins. brought it back to idle and same thing loads up & dies.

Looking for help any suggestions appreciated!!!

Thanks,

Sounds like your coil is going. It gets hot and loses voltage.

    Thanks for the reply Dozer.

I felt the coil when the boat was having issues yesterday & it was very hot to the touch. But do you think the coil would just cause issues at idle? After it dies, I have to hold the throttle wide open & crank for 20-30 seconds before it will fire & run. Then when I put it in gear and get it over idle is runs great.

I gone through everything on the fuel side so I guess I will start with the coil on the ignition side.

    Thanks again,
    Jeff

I have a friend with a Baja and a 502 and had the same exact symptoms. We tried the carburetor as you'd assume an idle issue would be caused by that, not enough fuel. Ended up changing the coil and took care of the problems. Especially when it runs fine until it heats up.

    Thanks again,

I changed the coil & just decided to change the plugs too even though that had 25 hours on them. Plugs were black & a couple were wet too. Checked timing & it was a few degrees slow but set now. Ran it on muffs for an hour & all seems ok now. Let engine come up to temp & ran @ 1500 for 10 mins, then back to idle for 10 mins several times & did not ever load up or die. Will take it to the water this week and give it the real test.

    Appreciate the reply,

    Jeff

Good deal. Pretty confident you found the problem. The low idle would load up the plugs and make the stall a certainty. Glad it seems to have worked out!

The only other thing I can think of is the choke may not be opening all the way when it warms up.

I looked at the choke when the boat was having the idle problems & it was fully opened. When I rebuilt the carb I sell everything back to factory spec including the choke. All on the carb side appears to be OK. I have only had the boat 2 years but the coil appeared to be the original one. I hope this does it!

    Thanks for the replys.
