Default paddle wheel

Hello everybody! I am new to the owners group. I have a 1999 Shabah 202 and my question is on the transom on the port side there is a paddle wheel with a couple of wires on it.Can some one explain to me what this is?

Yep. Have a look at this link & let us know if that's what you are referring to.

I just replaced mine and I had to replace the housing as well since one of the dog ears was broken off.

Here is a link to the housing

Amazon.com: Airmar S63 Bracket Kit: GPS & Navigation

And here is the paddle wheel

Airmar 33-110 Paddlewheel Kit | Blue Heron Marine Electronics

And... Here is the instruction sheet.

    http://www.airmartechnology.com/uplo.../17-032-01.pdf

Of course this is if you have the Model S63 transom mounted paddlewheel which I think most are.

I can tell you for sure that the paddle wheel on my boat drives the speedometer. I am not sure about the 'Pilot Tube" you reference. Where is this "pilot tube" located? A picture would be nice.

No, the paddlewheel sensor is only for the Trip Meter in the dash. The speedometer uses the water pickup in the outdrive. At least that's how it's been on every Mariah i've seen...

OK... My speedometer isn't working (havn't noticed if the trip meter is or not) . Where do I start looking to trouble-shoot it? My other boat had the Pitot tube style.

If you do a site search for "Speedo Repair" you'll get pages of threads on the subject. Have a look at post #12 by WetWilly in this thread.
