Default Radio Cuts out

Hey guys,
I have a question about the power to the Radio. Mine works fine, however when I try to up the volume to a certain point, it acts like it overloads and it keeps resetting until I turn the radio down. I have swapped out the radios and it still does it. Is there something that limits the power to the radio?
Thanks,
Brent

It could be that. I ahve noticed that at idle my volt meter falls down to about 10. When running full throttle it runs about 13. Anything I can do to check to see if it is the battery?

    Hi bnussbaum,

The simplest way is to take the battery to almost any Auto Parts store. Most stores have the ability to "load" test the battery. If the battery turns over the motor and it starts like a good battery, then chances are it's not the battery, but maybe the alternator/regulator instead (typically, the regulator should clamp the max voltage at around 14V when the RPMs exceed 2000 should the battery require the charge).

Do any of the gauges seem to get jittery when the radio goes on the fritz and does the radio act this way then the RPMs are over 2000 RPMs?

Either way, I would check your power and ground connections from the radio back to the battery terminal for a possible corrosion issue before you haul out the battery to be checked.

I might add when my radio cuts out the battery will not turn the motor over and I have to kick in the second battery to start. It is usually after 2 hours of play time. If you can start the motor I would have to assume it is not the battery. Sorry, I should have included this information the first time.

    Hi Mike,

I know this seems like a silly question, but... have you removed, cleaned and reconnected the POS and NEG battery terminals on the primary battery?

Lastly, if the second battery is connected, do you still have the same issue with the radio?

It does start the engine no problem. It does also cut out at full throttle. I might have to look at the connections. I know the accessory line is well mounted under the steering column. I guess I'll have to follow the ground and the power feed to see if there is any corrosion. Also the guages work just fine, just the radio. I will keep you posted to what I find. Thanks for the help!

I replaced my radio/stereo this past year. Had same type of troubles. I wasn't happy with the installation as the radio was not in the bezel correctly.

I removed the bezel (face plate the radio sits in) and checked the wires on the stereo. I did not see anything wrong, but put the radio back in place the way the original was. I have not had any trouble with it cutting out.

I may add, the bezel/faceplate is plastic and may crack. Many members have replaced it. You check out ordering a new one that is aluminum and much more sturdy on the parts list.

I also may add, I also had some ground issues when there was a water leak in an exhaust hose. Make sure you don't have any water leaks in the bidge or around the engine first.

    Good luck!

Mine cuts out sometimes too, but I ran my hand under the dash and if I touch or move the wires just right it comes back on (or off). I'd check under there and kinda move the wires around a little.
