Default New Sirius Radio

Does anyone have a sirius radio on their boat. What kind of antenna do you need? What happends to this kind of radio if you stop paying for the service getting signal? Can you still pick up local stations using the sirius antenna?

The Serius antenna is usually a little disc shaped item stuck somewhere on the boat. It's smaller than a hockey puck, and very unobtrusive. That antenna and a radio antenna are completely separate. You still need a radio antenna. The Serius radio will simply play the "introduction" channel once the subscription runs out.

Yes, I have Sirius onboard. I have the older style plug & play unit that transmits the signal to FM. It's completely seperate from the radio.

If you have a radio with Sirius built in, (if it says "Sirius Ready"), you shouldn't have any trouble receiving standard FM stations, and you can just select which you'd like to listen to, Sirius, FM or AM by just hitting the Band button. When the subscription runs out, you can either renew it, or just let it lapse. You will lose all satellite stations except for Channel 1, which will broadcast a message for you to subscribe to the service. The display will also read out the number to call to activate. If you choose not to activate, you can still enjoy AM & FM radio free of charge. However, I'll say Sirius offers a great variety of programming, and if you'll be spending quite a bit of time on the water, and it's within your budget, consider purchasing it. You won't be disappointed.

    Default Sirius Radio

Can the use of a sirius antenna alone without service pickup am,fm stations? Or will another antenna be needed!

Another antenna is required. The sirius antenna only picks up satellite stations. I've seen radio antennas for boats range from a simple wire that attaches to a bolt holding the windshield frame (utilizing the frame as an "antenna" as well) to power antennas like our Mariahs!

And if you are looking for an 'unobtrusive' am-fm antenna, Shakespeare makes a great one for just under $50. that adheres to the glass. I installed mine on my side glass and it doesn't give the game away that you may have a nice radio on board.

Heres a link to Boat Mart USA. Lousy image but very good product & it's on sale.
