welcome to the board oncman! this is a pretty common issue, we've got some info in the Mariah Parts List at the top of this forum, and if you do a search for "hatch" "actuator" or "lift" you'll probably find all the info you need!
as far as the window defogger, check the fuse block, then check the connection at the actual switch. mariah's electric connections are notorious for corrosion, sometimes all it takes is a little cleaning of the contacts to get things working again. if not, let us know and we'll try and help you fix the defogger.
