I know when you turn the key on, a long beep should happen. Does this beep also signal when there is a failure (oil pressure, overheating etc.)?

Yes. If it continues or starts beeping during operation you have an issue with overheating, low out-drive oil level or oil pressure in the engine. MOST of the time, it is due to low outdrive oil levels. Check your reservoir.
