Default New Member Flooding Issue

Hi guys!

I bought a 1997 198SE 5.7 carb Volvo Pentax engine a couple months ago. I have really enjoyed it. I have been lurking a while but I have some questions that I have not been able to find answers on. Everything has been really good with the boat. I recently almost was almost stranded due to what I think was a flooded engine. I tried cranking like I normally do, but this time it would not crank and there was a heavy smell of gasoline coming from the engine. The key also broke and I ended up hot wiring it after letting it sit a bit fiddling with the ignition.

I don’t think I have a choke or at least I cannot find one. I also do not think I have the option of disengaging the drive to allow it to rev in neutral. There is no button where others have one at the base of the throttle. My just has a rubber grommet covering an empty hole.

Is there a choke on these boats? Also, is there a procedure for cranking the boat if it is flooded if you can’t disengage the drive to crank? I have attached a picture of what my shifter looks like. It has a wired switch to the left of the shifter that I have no idea what it does. I marked it in red in the picture. The one in the picture did not have the switch mine has. Could this be a choke? Any help is greatly appreciated.

On my 1994 Mariah Barchetta 182 with a 3.6L has basically the same type of throttle. All I do is, Step 1 shift to full speed position to neutral to full speed to neutral. Step 2 Turn key to start and crank about 10-15 seconds. Repeat after about the second or third time it starts. Let it idle for about 30 seconds before engaging throttle to take off trailer. If out on water, let it idle about 30 seconds before shutting off motor for whatever reason. Try to start; if it does, fine no problems. If it doesn’t, pump to full throttle bring to neutral position one time and try to start. That’s only happened once to me personally. Good luck and fun, safe boating!
