Default 1998 252 shabah, Alt question.

this boat ran fine for the past week. (just bought it.) today I tried to start it and it will turn over great,, but no start or even attempt. something I noticed, normally when I turn the key on there is a "tone" that tone is gone. after doing some looking the big orange wire on the alt is corroded off and no longer connected. here's my question. is the Alt output directly connected to the Fuel pressure regulator? is that "tone" the warning that fuel pressure is not high enough for a start condition? It was to late in the day to get a new brass connector and new brass nut to try it today. hoping someone knows this.

additionally, one of the things I noticed was the ALT gauge on the dash was never right, maxing out at about 10 amp or nothing at all. I chalked this up to corrosion and had planned to open the dash and clean all gauges.

Are you certain the gage you are looking at is an Ammeter? It is unusual to find an Ammeter gage on a boat due to the long lengths of heavy gage wire that would be required to run from the engine bay to the gage at the helm. Or is the gage a Voltmeter? If a Voltmeter then it would be normal for it read around 10V if your alternator were not charging the system due to the broken connection at the rear of the alternator.

right, Voltmeter. any Idea on why the "tone" is gone and the engine wont start? got the new parts and will be headed over in an hour or so to see if that makes a difference.

I'm going to say you've "tripped" your deadman switch. The buzzer only sounds when the key is on and the engine is not running.

    Brian:
It embarrasses me to agree with you. My first solo trip in my Mariah started with my boat idling dockside while I put the trailer away. I came back, the engine stalled and would not restart, and I didn't think to check the kill switch because my son would NEVER touch that..... Uh huh!
Check the kill switch.... It's embarrassingly funny but cheaper than replacing the entire ignition system.

I would guarantee it is the kill switch. would also check the connections for the wire leading to it. I have bumped those before while pulling out my throwable and it disconnected without my knowing. You don't hear the chirp after turning the key on, and if you have fuel injection you probably won't here it pressurize either.

Yep,,,, fixed the alt wire, stepped up to the helm and turned the key,,, cranks but wouldn't start. pushed the kill switch clip in,, turned the key, tone and started right up.... LOL awesome, and now the alt is charging at 12 amps at idle.
    thanks.....

Congrats on the fix and good call by Brian. Lastly you mean 12 Volts at idle. When you get above 1500 RPM the Voltmeter should read somewhere between 13V and 15V depending on the temperature.

right ,, 12 volts at idle, she was running about 14 volts WOT and the stereo rocking.. Fixing that 1 wire fixed most of the electrical problems I had noticed.. now I just have to fix the speedometer and everything works. Thanks again for the help.
