Default Starter?

I took my new to me z210 out on Saturday. It started fine in the slip and after running for about 30 minutes we stopped to setup a tube. I went to start it again and nothing. No turning of the starter. I dropped anchor and proceeded to open the engine cover. When turning the key to start there was a click near the top of the engine, but nothing at the starter. I am assuming its like any other Chevy starter (Mercruiser 5.7L) and there's a solenoid on it. I hit it with a rock from shore thinking the solenoid was stuck to no avail. The solenoid and starter were very hot.

We got towed back to the marina after enjoying some swing and lunch.

My working theory is that the solenoid stuck when starting that morning and for the whole cruise the engine was driving the starter, burning it out. Thoughts?

Also, any tips on removing the starter? The previous owner has done it before and is going to lend a hand but I was wondering if you guys knew any tricks that would be helpful.

Cheers
Brett

I dont know about any tricks (other than getting someone else to do it for free) to removing & replacing a starter but if you want a troubleshooting guide to go thru before you remove/replace the unit click here.

Check and make sure the flywheel isn't chewed up if you suspect it was stuck on for any length of time.

Traced it back: the solenoid on starter was bad. Unfortunately I couldn't find anyone local that just sold the solenoid, so I picked up a whole new starter from West Marine in town.

It took me a bit but I got it installed and took the family out this afternoon for some tubing.

When we got back, I did restart it just to make sure everything was good.

    Back in business.

    Thank you for the help.

    Cheers
