just discovered my lower unit (aplha one, 96, 5.7 lt, talari) is cracked, half circle about the size of a baseball and wont hold any gear lube. can these be welded? if so wondering about the success rate of welding, has anyone done this?

I welded up a Cobra drive on my old boat , it had a hole punched in it from a underwater obstacle. It worked for 2 seasons and then gernaded.
It sounds like your drive had a leak and accumulated water inside. If it cracked that much you probably have other damage to deal with also , not to mention a reseal of the drive at the least.
My opinion is get a new lower unit. I wouldn't trust it after freezing.

I agree with Larry. Keep ur eyes out for a decent used one too. There a lot of older Alphas out there. You may can find a junk boat someone's wife wants out of the yard. Good Luck
