Default Hesitation

I’ve got a problem that I have been trying to fix for 2 years now and I need some help. The problem is in acceleration the boat starts and idles great but when I come out of the hole it falls on its face. The boat will kind of backfire before it takes off once it backfires it goes ok but it still lacks power. We also checked the timing and it seems to be a bit off it runs better with the ground wire that set the ignition to stock timing hooked up makes no since to me. Just wanted to know if anyone else has had any problems like this. Also it’s a 350 mag and my brothers 3.4l v6 will eat it alive out of the hole. Thanks for all the help.

If you do a site search for 'accelerator pump' or 'carburetor' you should find lots of threads on hesitation problems. You can also have a look at this particular thread.

The boat is carbureted and I put a new filter on each year and I’ve put new plugs in it. The guy that works on my boat was thinking it might be the ignition because of the timing issue.

I would start by checking the advance mechanism in the distributor. Take off the distributor cap and give the rotor a twist, it should move freely and return via the advance springs. If it doesn't... that is most likely your probem and you will have to determine why it isn't free, lack of lubrication, broken spring etc.

Another way to check if the advance is working properly is to get your hands on a timing light with an advance knob. You should be able to look up the advance curve (timing vs. RPM) in a service manual and verify it with the timing light.

    Good luck.

i`m not sure about these, but my last boat had a filter {screen } inside the pickup tube inside the fuel tank.it got stopped up with trash inside the tank.i tiried everything i could think of before i found the problem.it would idile all day, soon as you hit the throttle it would bog down and die. also check the coil for low voltage output.

I agree with Steve. Put a good timing light on it. It is a fairly easy check, and essential before trying any carb tuning.
    Happy Boating
