Default 6.2L Merc with starter issue

First let me say that I have read the sticky thread on starter issues. But let me give you some background...

I just bought this boat a little over a month ago. We ran it 4 times in fresh water and no issues whatsoever. The last time we took it out, it started overheating as soon as we left the dock. I immediatley turned back around and shut her down. Once I got her home, I realized that the impeller had disintegrated. There was nothing left but the rubber shaft! So I replaced the impeller and the whole water pump housing. I wasn't able to test run her on land because my intake is on the bottom of the hull and I can't get a flusher under my trailer. So I took her back out to the lake to see if the impeller worked. When I turned the key, I got a very loud almost metal sounding bang, and the engine did not turn. I freaked out and thought the engine had seized up. So I took it to someone who looked at it and hit something back by the starter and the engine did bump over a little. We found that terminal A on the starter solenoid had disintegrated and the rubber boot over it was melted. I replaced the connector and tried to bump the engine and get nothing now. No click or anything.

So this is what I get following the sticky starter thread: I get voltage on Terminal A of the slave solenoid with the ignition switch off. As soon as I put the key in Accessory position, the voltage disappeared. I got no voltage on A, B, C, or D of the slave solenoid. UUUGGGGGHHHHH

I have tried to remove the ground wires on the grounding buss bar to clean them but they are frozen on there! So I am soaking them overnight in JB Blaster and will try tomorrow to remove and clean them. I am just hoping that after all this that my engine will actually crank and isn't toast!!!

Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated....

I am such a freakin' idiot. After cleaning the ground buss bar in the engine compartment there was still no change. Long story short...It turned out to be a dirty terminal on the ignition switch. I cleaned them all up and the engine bumped over! Yea! Now I just need to get my Flush Pro system so I can start her all the way up on land.

The saga continues...So I installed my homemade flush valve( I didn't want to fork out $68 for the Flush Pro system) on my raw water intake today and was so excited to try and fully start her up on land. So when I turned the key it sounded like the engine was turning over, but it was a loud metal sound. It was like the starter wasn't grabbing. So I am assuming that my starter or flywheel is shot. Is this a correct assumption? I will pull the starter tomorrow and see what it looks like. And any tricks to pulling the starter?

Just a note, make sure voltage is high on the batteries. Its possible for the starter to not operate correctly with insufficient voltage I believe.

Yea, my batteries are fully charged. I keep it plugged into my trickle charger with shore power at my house. Is there a way to check the flywheel when I pull the starter? I hate to destroy a new starter because it turns out the flywheel is chewed up!

Maybe also check if not in gear whilst starting.

    Succes,

Ok, got the starter out. I posted some pics of it. Is it possible to rebuild this or should I just chunk out the $214 for a new one....

I vote go new, I am all for saving a buck but not on the starter. And only buy the marine starter, they are not the same as auto parts starters as you are likely aware.
