Default short in this wire please help.

It kept cutting out on me and not starting back up, so i used my test light and found out that the current stopped here. I unplugged this connection and plugged it back in and pushed it tight, boom fired right up. If you give it about half to 3/4 throttle it dies out, unplug and plug back in, and boom fires up. I am new to boats and this is my first one so can someone please tell me what this connection is and how to fix this problem. I thought it was loose so I added a hose clamp in the tight position, and it still dies when you open it up. It may just be loose but i don't know.

Hi My_My_My_Mariah, that looks to be the main engine harness connector. I know you have a '90 1850 XL, but can you tell us what motor and outdrive you have?

    Hi My_My_My_Mariah,

There should be nine pins inside the connector, I recommend you use very fine sand paper/emery cloth to clean each pin and the corresponding socket on the other half of the plug. If possible, see if you can gently expand each pin slightly or reduce the diameter of the socket for a tighter fit.

After you insure the contacts are clean, protect them by spraying them with a little WD-40 before reassembling the connector, this helps keep the moisture out and reduces the occurrence of corrosion.
