Default Alpha 1 squeal when triming??

Just as stated, and a bit concerning. running around at idle today, wanted to put trim up a bit to watch out for obstacles. tap the trim up button, got a squealing noise, sound like metal on metal, for a few revolutions then stopped. trim upa little more, same thing, and so on and so on. I had also noticed that from time to time, as I put it into gear, i get that squeal for a very short time and then its fine. Sounds like a bearing going out or something, any ideas on this one?

Thanks Willy, I've been doing some research this morning and have come up with some other symptoms that may be related. when turning at slow speeds, i get a very slight vibration. Noticed that in another post. I'm sure we're on the right track now. I've been trying to find a diagram of the Alpha 1 leg to get an idea of where it is located, and how hard it will be to replace. Are there any other bearings located in the unit that may be worn as well?

I know this might be a long shot, but it's very possible... Was your stereo on when it happened? A poor electrical connection can cause interference with your stereo, causing the electric trim motor to be heard thru your stereo. Seems I've even heard my trim motor "squeal" thru the stereo before when my battery cables loosened up.

A couple trips out after moving my subs up under the dash I had a terrible fast thumping coming thru my subs while listening to the radio with the engine off. I couldn't figure out what it was until I noticed the depth finder on. Turned it off and the noise stopped. It was interference from the transducer of the depth finder.

    Hi midwest mariah,

Replacing the Gimbal Bearing will require you to remove the outdrive at the gimbal. It will also require the use of a few special tools for the job. This is also a good time to replace the drive shaft bellow as well (and some more tools). Typically, the only other things involved may be the U-joints. All in all, you might want to leave this to a mechanic.

Here is the leg removal info and the Gimbal bearing replacement info. Click here and open the third PDF for leg removal and open the fifth PDF for the bearing info.

    Good luck,
    WetWilly
