Default Intake full of sand/mud - overheat

Hi,

Last Saturday, we hit a sand/mud bank and burried the prop. We pushed the boat off the bank, and 20 seconds after starting got the buzzer. the temp gauge read 200 F so we immediately shut down and got a tow home. The boat (1993, 2350Z) had run for several hours with no temperature problems before that, the temp not going over 150 F. It has just had a new intake pump impeller. Is there a simple way to solve this, such as sticking a garden hose on one of the cooling system hoses to blow the sand/mud back out the intake holes?

Regards

Clive

I had the exact same thing happen to me a year or so ago. Fortunately it was covered by insurance (submerged object - or something like that).
The mechanic had to take off the complete water cooling system to get rid of everything. Some was baked on as it was mud, we couldnt get a tow so had to slowly head home at less than 5 kts for about an hour.
The pump impeller was replaced and other minor things done but all is good now. The guys here with a ton of more knowledge will be able to help you better with regards to back flushing or cleaning it out though. So hopefully someone will pipe in soon to help you. Check with your insurance company as to whether you are covered, it may save you a few $.
    Good luck.

You might want to try a set of these

They attach to your outdrive water intake, and hook up to a standard garden hose. Turn it on, start your boat up, and run it for about 5 minutes, that should clear it all out!
