Default 4.3 merc circut breaker why - what

just purchased a 182Z? (1999-2001)? help ? year - 4. 3 merc would not start - solenoid clicks no turn over - found reset (circut breaker next to solenoid) what could cause this to trip - where do I get a wireing diagram for electronics? Note - noticed the tach ran to 6500 while doing 45mph - engine was not overreving - and tach quickly returned to 3900 rpm at 43 mph - could this be an electronic problema related to the circute breaker tripping ,

The circuit breaker is the main circuit breaker to the boat. It would trip if you have an over current condition which can happen if you have a bunch of stuff on including extra accessories running at the same time, or you have a direct short in the power line that goes up to the front from the back. It is Pretty hard to trip though, so if it does it again You have a problem that really needs to be found. Of course, It could also be a bad breaker that can't maintain itself.

What I am having a hard time understanding is you say that the solinoid clicks, but thats it. If the circuit breaker was blown, you should have nothing happen, no clicks, no guages, nothing, which bring me to the clicking issue,

I would check that all battery connections are tight and clean, as well as the starter connection to the battery. It is a direct connection. Also check that the ground connection to the block is tight. My instict says you will find a loose ground issue that is causing both of your problems.

As far as the tack issue, it could be related to a grounding issue up front, a connection issue at the engine, or it is possible the tach is going out. I would start by checking the molded engine harness connector that is near the circuit breaker. Take it apart, clean it up, and put it back together. These things come loose and often corrode. Then check all your grounds upfront, and at the rear as I said above.

Let me know what you find

Last two digits on your hull ID tell you the model year. Sounds like you may have some corrosion issues in your wiring connections which means they need to be pulled apart, cleaned & then reconnected. As for the tach, give the small dial on the back a spin around a couple of times then re-set it to "6 cyl". Sometimes this will correct that problem.

starter selenoid was faulty as i suspected and I think it was a direct result of a loose connection to the starter from the selonoid causeing a high amperage faiult which set off the circut breaker - twice and eventually lead to the fault in the solenoid contacts.
