Default New to boats and Mariah is my first!

Hello everyone. Living SUPER close to a large lake in Central Florida, my wife and I decided we should get a boat. We always love going out on friend's boats so why not get our own, right!?

I had been searching for a few weeks and stumbled upon a pretty sweet deal on a 1995 Mariah Barchetta 182 w/4.3 Mercruiser and Alpha One outdrive. I brought it home last Saturday afternoon and had it in the water Saturday evening after purchasing all the required safety equipment.

The stereo needs work and the navigation bow light and front courtesy light do not work; I'll be getting to those soon. The trim sensors are not connected and a manual dash switch has been installed to control the trim (or is this the factory trailer trim control?) I definitely want to get the trim operating as it should with the dash gauge operating.

Now my main point of concern is the low max rpm and speed. The most rpm I can get at WOT is 3400 at a gauge speed of 34mph. This seems really low. It has a stainless prop with some various markings on it. Appears to be a Silverado (14 1/2 x 17") QUICKSILVER RH Propeller, QS5052X, but there are other numbers punched into it that lead me to believe it may have been modified.

Glad to be part of the general boating community and a Mariah owner. Looking forward to tapping into the wealth of knowledge within the forum!

Interior looks to be in good condition, Nice looking boat. Were you using the speedo or GPS for your speed? The standard speedo's use water pressure to gauge the speed and need to be verified if they are running true. Did the engine sound like it was at full rpm? The tach on my boat gets screwy some times. I have read from others on the site that you have to spin the cylinder selector around a few time on the back to get it working correctly. I am currently running a 14.25 x 17 RH 4 Blade SS and my max speed is 47 MPH GPS right now with my 300 HP motor. Welcome to the club!

You should be 4400 to 4600 ( assuming its the 190 hp/ or 4400 to 4800 with the newer 220hp)
1.Fuel condition. Type and Octane possibly old fuel
2.Propeller pitch or diameter, damaged blades
3.Restricted fuel pickup tube or anti siphon valve Fuel System Test
4.Crankcase oil volume, high oil level can cause aerated oil and lifter collapse
5.Marine growth on hull and outdrive
    6.Wrong gear ratio in outdrive
7.Restricted carburetor air intake (clogged flame arrestor)
8.Restricted exhaust system (broken exhaust shutters/flappers) in engine transom shield or drive
    9.Poor cylinder compression Compression Test
    10.Carburetor defective, or wrong type.
    11.Fuel pump pressure and vacuum
12.Boat overloaded, improperly loaded, or improperly trimmed.
    13.Engine Overheating
14.Engine timing and ignition system operation
15.Remote control cables and linkage for proper travel to open throttle plates fully.

I had this saved from my last boat, and it so happened for me it it was the travel for my throttle to open all the way, hope find why its not hitting wot, but there are a number of variables to troubleshoot! Lol!

    Thanks for the replies!

Hunter, I saw that list while researching and was going to start going through it. First thing I'm going to check is the travel for the throttle to open like you suggested. That gives me hope since that was your problem! The prop is correct, it's a stainless Quicksilver 14.5", 17 pitch 3 blade. The hull is perfect. The fuel is supposed to be new that's in it and it does smell fresh. Everything works perfect and runs great, it just feels like I'm at only 3/4 throttle when I have it WOT.

My numbers came straight from the dash gauges, but by feel and sound from the engine, they seem correct. I will check the tach engine selector to make sure it's not corroded between settings.

Yes its from bondo off iboats which is another excellent site forum. Chime in when you have it figured out with what was wrong, it helps a lot to finish the thread and other members can read if they have the same issue.
    Thanks buddy!
