My boat has been sitting for the winter, out of the water and covered, during our winter months here in Fort Worth, Tx. We've had a couple of very hard freezes. In early March we're taking a trip and I wanted to put the boat in the water. It's a 2007 18' FS, 135 hp. I haven't had a chance to change the oil or impeller yet.

My question, am I risking it by putting it in the water w/o an impeller change? I have the oil and impeller changed every year, and was planning on taking care of it after this upcoming trip.

I only replace my impeller every other year. I think you will be fine. I live just north of Montgomery, Alabama

My personal opinion is that it's overkill to change the impeller every year. I change mine every 3-4 yrs and the 3 times i've changed it since i've owned the boat there was very little wear on the old one. I believe that most reputable shops would tell you to change it every 3 yrs and maybe every two yrs if you spend a lot of time in the shallows with sandy bottoms. As for engine & out-drive oil, i change mine in the fall before i put it away for the winter and it's good to go in the spring w/out changing it again.

IF you winterized the engine/outdrive properly last fall, you shouldn't have any issues this spring.

Every 2-3 yrs seems to be my norm as well.
If you put 200+ hrs on your boat per year , it would be a good idea to change it every year.
Most of us are lucky to get 40-50 hrs a summer.
Load up and go have fun! , it'll be just fine MOB.
