Hi Guys, I am Passing through San Francisco for 1.5 days in a few weeks time on my way to Alaska and was wondering if anyone on that side of the pond could give me a few "must sees" I know there is Alcatraz and I am planning on going there in the morning,but as my stay is short I would like to cram as much as I can and would not like to missout on anything.

Hey there Andy -

You are hitting a great city at a great time of year. If you are doing the Alcatraz trip you will be leaving from the Fisherman's Wharf area so you might as well stroll through there - not my thing but since you are in the area and haven't seen it. You might ride a cable car from that area to another part of the city like ChinaTown. Since you like boating you might walk from Fishermans Wharf over to the Marina District to check out the local boating scene. If you head that way you might keep going and hit the Golden Gate Park area. If you like the arts go to the de Young Museum- very unique and the crowds have finally died down from the opening. If you are a foodie you have about a billion choices and will probably miss your flight to Alaska. If you are going to be there on a Saturday you must hit the farmers market at the Ferry Building on Saturday morning.

Those are some broad stroke ideas - if you have any specific interests let me know. Have fun.

Hey Phlorida Thanks for the info it is a Saturday we hit San Francisco but we dont get there till the evening we have all day on the Sunday but have to leave around 3 oclock on the Monday.We are staying in the Fishermans Wharf area therefor I asume it will be handy for some of the things you mentioned. Just as I said earlier this I dont want to miss out on anything as I may not be back in that area.

One thing i did while i was there was to walk out to the middle of the Golden Gate bridge. Awesome experience feeling the bridge move. I also did Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf and Alcatraz and they were great too.

Hi Andy, so a stop over in SF this Saturday night, rats, too bad we didn't know sooner, I would have recommended a local tour bus through the city, best way to catch all the local sights in one day!

Since you're on limited time it will depend on how you plan to get around SF. We have the Muni (bus, cable cars and trolleys) which goes just about everywhere but it takes quite a bit of time getting around or you can drive but it's a real pain with the traffic let alone finding parking that won't bankrupt you these days, SF is known as the city of No left Turns (aka: Three rights make a left)

Anyway, I would recommend strolling around the Wharf on Monday since you're staying there and if you plan it right, you should be able to get the following sites done. The ferry to Alcatraz and Bay tours is there along with the WW2 Submarine USS Pampanito and Pier 39 is at the east end towards the Ferry Building, that's where the Sea Lions like to hang out and tan (I recommend standing up-wind while observing – they don't use under arm deodorant).

For Sunday, I recommend:

1)Lombard Street - The crookedest street in the world. (You can walk or drive down it so if you're driving, do this on Sunday, otherwise Monday morning you can take a cable car from the west end of the Wharf)
2)Mikey's right, a walk on the Golden Gate Bridge is neat! (You will need a car or you can use Muni)
3)The newly rebuilt Steinhart Aquarium and indoor Rainforest located in Golden Gate Park across from the De Young Museum. (Again a car is quicker but there's the parking but Muni goes there as well)

If you manage to hit these sites You've done extremely well.

Hi Guys Thanks for the info, once again I dont want to miss out on anything as I dont know when or if I will be back in that area, Wet Willy once again you excell with information and I hope I can fit most of what you suggest in , I dont arrive in SF untill the 8th of May not this weekend.

Dang, seems like I've been missin all kinds of little details, think I need new glasses.....

Well then,I still recommend taking a tour around SF to catch all the sites without having to deal with the traffic or parking. Here's a Google search for available SF tours....click here.

Hi Wet Willy, HOPE you can read this with your old glasses I am stopping by with my better half(wife) on our way to Alaska for 2 weeks. we get into SF on Saturday 8th May late evening then catch the boat at 3 o'clock'ish on Monday 10th May

Things are just starting to warm up over here in Scotland at the moment, the sun has been out for 2 days so far and all of us Scots think we are in the Tropics,
Just dropped my boat off for it's service hope to get it back before the end of the week and get it into the water at the weekend lets hope for a long hot summer here in Bonny Scotland(but I dont think there's much chace of that.

Hey Andy hope you have a great holiday,sounds like an adventure. In not really jealous (much )

I missed our opening day launch on loch fyne last weekend but all revved up and ready to go. Hoping to get my first outing on the may weekend(weather permitting in Scotland).

Hopefully you will manage a wee hurl before your hols.
