power steering

I have a 93 mariah diablo bowrider with the 4.3L alpha 1 moter. The issue I have is with the power steering... I have replaced the pump and it has fluid and is pumping but the wheel is very stiff and hard to turn in and out of the water??? Any suggestions please help!!

My 1996 200 Shabah has the exact same issue. Very hard to turn. I'm not sure of the cause, but plan to dig into it in the spring.

Just a guess but probably the steering cable worn. Search for some thoughts. Binding somewhere?

My 240 had very stiff steering too. It needed a new Control Valve.

well maybe one of those responces are the answer I just hope that its not to expensive like repairing the rack and pinion system or anything like that...

I don't remember what mine cost exactly, but with a big block there was a lot of work getting to it. I think the part was only a couple hundred. With your smaller engine, you may be able to get to it a lot easier. Of course, you'll need a good diagnosis of the problem first. Good luck.

if the steering wheel stiff when the motor is off? can you turn the outdrive by hand. if not most likely the cable is the problem. You can disconnect by the transom and then turn the wheel. there is a sleeve or cylinder that does have a grease fitting but it really sounds like a cable. not too big of a job usually.

yeah its stiff even with the motor off. I cant turn the outdrive by hand so hopefully it is just a cable...
