Because if you cannot prove your allegations in court, the court may award costs to the defendant which can include his costs of filing a defence, taking time from work to appear etc. I believe the max award in "Conciliation Court" is $100 for costs in MN. Also note that in conciliation court in MN you can have an attorney present. And...the defendant may also counter-claim against you.

Where did you get the idea that boat was worth $12k in good condition?

I just looked a week ago. That's with a trailer. I had to buy a bunch for the boat to make it worth that much. For one a as prop and a 400 fish finder. The boat will be nice after the motor is done. I plan on keeping the boat for a long time.
