Default Lighting Requirements

I have an Eagle, single-axle trailer under my 1992 2000Z and absolutely ZERO of the lights on my trailer work,

It has two small amber lights mounted front-facing on the step in front of the wheel well, along two small red ones facing rear on the step behind the wheel well.

It also has two large red lights at the very back end of the trailer, along with a small strip of 3 or 4 red lights at the center of the rear of the trailer (between the two larger red lights.)

My question is, can I replace all those lights with just two large red ones that do all the things like brake, turn, etc, and two small amber ones?

Overton's holiday catalog (2009-#9D, page 82, item # 76856) has the above set, which includes wiring, for like $15 and was wondering if I can get rid of all the old lights, which don't work, and replace them with the set I mentioned?

As of now, I only trailer my boat a couple miles in the spring and fall, usually to get it out of storage and putting it into storage, so I don't want to spend a small fortune rewiring my trailer if I can order the $15 light set and be done with it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! Patrick

I'm sure it varies from state to state but here is a general guide from boatersoutlet.com.

Hi Patrick, let me toss my .02 in. Your plan sounds like it will keep you legal (check your state's requirements), but if the lights all quit at once, have you checked the ground? Could be something simple and even less than $15. Good luck

Good point about checking the ground first.
Here is a decent general guide to the legal stuff for most states.

Looks like you basically need lights in all the places you mentioned and they all need 45º of visibility.

    thanks for the detailed list!

I guess I need to replace all the existing lights, rather than just go with a basic set up of just a few lights.

I will have to do some more research based on those drawings to see what I need to buy!

Let's just say, there is much corrosion on the trailer and the ligghts and wires....half of the wires aren't connected to any lights....nor could they be connected due to corrosion.

I don't want to bother trying to repair all that stuff, would just rather take the old stuff all out and put new stuff in and know that it's functional.

I also need some welding and general maintenance on the trailer itself, so I was hoping the lighting would be cheap comapred to the welding.
    Thanks for the help though!

    Patrick

    Hi depman160,

Good luck with restoring your trailer, may I suggest replacing your existing lights with LED ones if you can.

Even though they are a little more expensive, they're completely waterproof, brighter and since there are no bulbs, they'll probably outlive your trailer.

I would love to just be able to take it somewhere and have someone do it for me, but I already know the cost is more than I want to spend...even without getting an estimate.

And with a limited number of welders who can do the other trailer work for me, I am hoping to limit my costs all around to get the trailer back to it's normal, useful state.
