My trailer jumped the hitch and spent a few seconds riding on the spare wheel. The jockey post became seezed and when I turned the handle, the cotter pin snapped. When I removed the top cover, the centre shaft was screwed well down into the recess and the remains of the cotter pin were jammed in. My son sawed and chiseld off the cotter pin ends and punched out the part in the hole. However, he thought the center shaft then had to go downwards and hammered it down till there is only about 0.25" protruding out of the top od the unit.

Does anyone have experience on how to recover from this position? Do I need to pplace the end of the post on hard ground, put wood protectioneither side of the brake pipe on the top of the girder frame just forward of the jockey post welded attachment to the frame, and hammer the frame down with a sledge to push the post back up?

Sounds like you might have to replace the jack to me.. That shaft is attached at the bottom to move the post. Something is bent or seized due to corosion.

I reckon you're right. I priced it up this weekend and got a stand-alone 'Bulldog' jack welded to the side of the trailer.
