Default Way over RPM's

Took boat out for first time Yesterday. 96' Shabah 200. 5.7l, 2bbl Carb, 1.62 ratio. Rebuilt motor i'm told. Prop is a Turbo SS 14-1/4"-19.

Opened it up and was surprised to see at least 6,000 rpm at about 51mph +/_.

This seems odd to me that this engine is even capable of that RPM. Do these numbers sound right for this combination?

Something is wrong and I would suggest it is most likely your tach if your engine doesn't sound like its revving at ridiculously high rpms. Your WOT range for the 5.7L is 4400 - 4800 rpms. I think you would know it if it was revving around 6000. First thing i would check is your tach. Open up the access to your tach (likely behind the bow back rest in front of the console) and you should see a small dial on the back of the tach marked 4-6-8. Turn it 2-3 times and then make sure it is set at 8 cyl. (see the attached pic).

That did the trick. Turning the cyl select back and forth seemed to fix the Tach.
Wont know for sure till im on the water, but the tach was in line with the engine when I revved it.
    Thanks for the help
