Just thought I would post a few pictures of my recent completed project.

The old bench was rotted and not very stable. I decided to rebuild it as a hybrid seat/subwoofer enclosure.

All wood is pressure treated, then applied with notorious coats of outdoor wood sealer.

The internal chambers measured at 1.2Cu-Ft of airspace.

Subwoofers are 10" Kicker-Comp. Very efficient and durable. My personal favorite speaker for this application.

Yes Sir Oregon,

Subwoofers are non-directional compared to all other speakers, they are designed to resonate off other surfaces. Just like in vehicles, you fire the subs towards the rear/floor or any corner before making it to the final destination of listening location.

A good example of the correct placement of a subwoofer in a home audio surround sound system is to place the subwoofer in the prime listening / seating position in the room. power unit on at a normal listening volume and army crawl around the edges of the room. Where you hear the most accurate sound is where you place the unit.

If you notice in the pictures I have the "ports" shooting to the front of the boat, That's where the sound is generated. The semi-sealed rear sun pad/motor compartment just gives me extra back pressure which results in a higher SPL (sound pressure level)

You learn some cool tricks with sound after 10yrs in the mobile electrons industry.

also a cool factor when your friends cant figure out where the sound is coming from : )

I didn't see the ports myself either. I was also questioning firing into the engine compartment with a sealed box.

The ports were the square holes. They were covered in carpet in the last pics. Interesting idea, it hides the speakers, keeps them out if the weather, and away from a foot or anything else hitting them. I like! :beer: I'm glad I haven't put any in mine yet. I see me stealing some ideas here.

Very nice! I applaud your use of basic sound principles to design your clever configuration. (I'm a former audio engineer, so I can appreciate that!) Not only does it make perfect sense from a physical sound wave perspective, keeping the subs protected from the weather and out of the eyes of thieves is a brilliant idea!

Thanks for sharing! I like the vent facing the seating area and the subs facing back. I've been looking at marine audio on other forums as well. This seems to be a great way of getting the sound you want and protecting your investment. I'd do the same in my boat.
