Recently noticed a noise similar to the sound the alert makes when you first turn the key on prior to engaging the starter. There is now a sound very much like that when the boat is running. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Just to clarify, that's low drive oil...not engine oil level.

Yes, outdrive oil.

The warning system monitors 3 things.
-gear lube level for outdrive
-engine temperature
-engine oil

Check the gear lube reservoir on your engine. It's likely the culprit. If it's full and you're still getting the alarm, you may need to replace the gear lube reservoir sensor. It's a one piece deal that includes both the reservoir and sensor, and it's about $50.

Check your engine oil level. Add as necessary.

Watch your temperature gauge. If you're rising above 160 then you should replace your impeller before using it again.

Had my boat winterized this week and it was low on oil in the outdrive reservoir. Thanks for the feedback/good advice!

$365 for winterizing seems pretty pricey for oil/filter change, changed outdrive fluid, fogged motor, and stabil. Cold weather coming in tonight, and they did pick it up from dry storage, service it, and return. More expensive every year.

Wow, $365 for a basic winterizing service that doesn't even include outdrive removal, check, and lube? Man, that's steep. You can do it yourself and save quite a bit. It's actually a lot easier than most people think; I've been doing mine for the last 4 years. I think I spend about $150 for everything, and that's including winterizing water system, toilet, air conditioning, and generator. That takes about 3 hours to do everything, but you can probably get yours done in an hour or so!

Initially there's a little expense to buy the winterizing kit, ear muffs, oil changer, outdrive oil pump, etc, but those are all one-time expenses, and still with all the supplies, you'll be under $365. But the biggest expense isn't monetary, it's trust in yourself that you can do it. That takes a pretty good amount of time to build that up. If you use the right stuff and follow the correct procedure every time, you'll never have anything to worry about, and it'll save you a lot!
