Consider locating the new battery on the opposit side of the boat. Batteries are heavy, and with two on the same side, the boat will be listing just a bit. This isn't a big deal for a lot of folks, but a slightly listing boat would drive me crazy. As far as batteries go, I would recommend an absorbed glass mat type...no electrolite sloshing around, and no spills if the battery tips over. As a matter of fact, I think AGM batteries work just fine no matter what their position is, ie, on their back, their side, etc.

You can look at this thread. I posted a drawing of what I did to mine when I added 2 House batteries. If your adding just one additional battery, the concept is the same.
