Hi Ed,
Guess you won't know which way the previous owner went until you take it off. If you decide to leave it on, just check the area around the bolts for any sign of corrosion as SS guard and bolts and aluminum don't mix for very long. This was the incentive for me to have mine fixed.
As for our skeg, all I did was prep and paint it. I had the metal repair done at one of our local marinas where we have a gentleman who specializes in metal repair and fabrication. He was kind enough to stop working on another customers vehicle and take care of me real quick, seems I caught him in the middle of fabricating parts for one of Arlen Ness's bikes. He used another Bravo 3 drive to make a template and then cut, shaped and wielded a new piece of aluminum to make up for the missing section.
