well, strange day today!
Got the quote for the new graphic's. I was happy with the price so went and removed the old graphic's from the boat. With a cup of coffee in hand i stood back to admire my work when the doubt set in! not sure i want to clutter up the side of the boat now as i quite like the look of it in just white... still think it needs the shields and mariah logo, but not sure it needs anything else. i'm going to sleep on it then remove the rest of the black line tomorrow. also unpacked the canvas package and tryed that out for size. i dont think it has ever been out. |
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
can anybody tell me the size of my fuel tank?
fitting my gps tomorrow and i'l need to calibrate the fuel flow meter on it. |
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!

Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!

Well not much progress at the moment as the weather is being typically British! :shakehead:
Just a few small touches. Changed the louver vents on the back today, I find it strange that the 2001 180 diablo is the only boat in the range to not have stainless ones??? I understand that my boat was produced in a time when the factory was having troubles, and was made in an attempt to boost sales in the lower end of the market, but for the sake of some small touches like shiny vent covers and some bow rails this boat would have the feeling of being a finished product! It puts me in a strange position where I know I have an unmolested and original boat, but I feel that it needs finishing off where the factory fell short on a few items! I’m not a purist but I fully appreciate that what I have must be quite a rare boat. Especially over here! What are the thoughts on changing things around over the pond? |
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
I would make whatever changes you feel that would add to the looks of the boat. In the world of these type of boats 'original & unmolested' have very little meaning nor does it add any value.

Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
resale value!
not in it to make money!........ :D someone once told me that if your worried about how much it's going to cost then don't buy a boat, buy a kite. |

If you think the modifications will improve the look and your happiness with the boat, then go for it. I will tell you though, the 180 Diablo was the basic entry line boat in the Mariah line. The factory didn't "fall short", the Diablos were their budget boat, so it didn't include things like bow rails, stainless vents, or midship cleats. It's not going to have all the fancy things like the "Z" models, but it's still light years better than any competitor's entry line, and your boat still looks much better than any of 'em! :wink_thumbup: |
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
I must say guy’s it’s nice to be amongst such a nice open minded bunch of people.
Maybe I’ve spent too much time restoring old motorcycles, where some people get so upset if you even use the wrong bolts on something! As for the Diablo, I’m under no illusions as to what it is. I know it’s the budget model and yes you’re so right when you say it’s still far better than the alternatives. I always considered that my Sea Ray was well built, but it’s not a touch on the Mariah. There are very few Z’s over here, in fact I think I’ve only ever seen 2 others and one is in the same boat yard as mine. The chances of owning one are a very far off dream for me, but hay ho you never know…. I really am enjoying owning this boat, even though it has only been for a short time so far. And yes I did wait a long time for the right one to come along. The fact that this one almost fell into my lap was a bonus. There are a few things that I want to add to it to make it mine, nothing much just some personal touches. Just someone stop me before I go putting a raccoon’s tail on the arial!!! I am happy to share my journey with the boat with you guys if you are happy for my ramblings to be put up here on this fine forum? |
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
Or for us North Americans who can remember this.... a tiger tail from your gas tank cover courtesy of ESSO in the '60's.

When I got there all the doors were closed up and nobody in site, nothing strange there given the time of year. Went into the marina office to ask a few questions to be told they stopped trading at the end of November! No answer to the phone number, but the website is still up and running so I’ve dropped them an Email. I hope they are not another victim of the economy! Sad times |

So the weather finally broke long enough for me to get out and do some work on the boat today.
Fitted the plotter and VHF Radio/Arial, also upgraded the stereo with a Kenwood CD player I had kicking around in the garage. I noticed a couple of things about my boat today, There's not a lot of space for extra's in the cockpit of a Diablo  it's supposed to be fitted with a fixed steering wheel and it got an adjustable one also I didn't think the Diablo had midship cleats which mine has..... Bonus :wink_thumbup: |
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
PM me your hull ID and I'll check the factory build sheets to see if those items were specially ordered on your Diablo!
|
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
cool, :wink_thumbup:
It would be nice to know a bit about my boat. Every avenue i've tried so far has drawn a blank! PM sent |

Cold but sunny here today, so I made the most of it.
Fitted a decent set of speakers in the back of the cockpit and moved the light from under the side pods to somewhere useful. I replaced them with some ambient blue lighting. Installed a ski mirror (very carefully) to the screen and finished cleaning up the back end. Finally got the painted name off and I’ve started putting the new decals on. |
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
Whoa, did you add that trim around the round shield logo in the back? To look like a devil with a triton? That's pretty sweet, I've never seen anything like that before!!

The snows all gone now! What a load of fuss over nothing…. :shakehead:
So with the aid of a fan heater I was able to get the new graphics on today. Many thanks to those members on here who helped me get my hands on original Mariah shields, they really do make all the difference. :wink_thumbup: Before and after |
That looks great! You did an awesome job!

So today I fitted the swim platform trim switch and the exhaust tips,
And before you ask their as real as pammy’s B:eek_animated:Bs Also started to clean up the outdrive ready for painting, But it’s been way too cold to paint anything today! So once the leg is painted it’s done. Time for a bloody good clean then back on the rack. Hopefully I’l get a chance to test out the new tabs sometime next month |
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
Ok, now i'm curious. Who is 'pammy' and when do we get to confirm the b:eek_animated:bs are real? :rolling_laugh:

So a thread that started out as a simple question about smart tabs has turned into a bit of a projects thread! (Maybe admin could do a bit of housekeeping for me)
Today I put the boat back on the rack, Mrs B has pointed out that there are more important jobs to do around here other than playing with my boat! can't think what they might be??? I took a few pictures down the creek at the end of our lane before I put it away. I must take the time to do an album in the gallery as there isn’t a 2001 180 diablo so far. |
I hate the honey do's when there's boat projects
|
Re: My Diablo's got a fat ass!
Good pics Andy.
Definately get your gallery going!! I get CRS when the honey do's and the boat projects collide. LOL |
Is that Cranky Reaction Syndrome ?
