Default 98 Z255 Shabah - Speedo and Tach Removal?

The speedo on my boat has not worked since I got it and the tach was a bit jumpy last season. I spoke to Faria and they said to send both of the guages back to them and they will fix them.

I am looking for advice oh how to remove both guages and exactly what should be send back to the guage manufacturer.

It looks like I am going to have to pull off the entire guage cluster to remove both guages. Do I also need to send the wiring that goes from the dash to the speedo pickup? It is the paddle wheel pickup, not the tube.

For the tach, do i send just the guage, or send the guage, wiring, and the tach hookup on the motor?

Thank you in advance

Hello....I just wanted to mention that I am 99% sure that the paddle wheel on your transom is actually for the trip odometer I am sure you have. The speedo pickup should be the small hole in the outdrive at the top of the skeg.

First off, Mark43 is right about the paddle wheel and the pickup point for the speedo is on the outdrive.

I'm not familiar with the layout of your console area but, you should have access to the backside of your gauge cluster from somewhere rather than having to remove the cluster to get at the wiring. If so, i would recommend removing the air line that connects to the backside of the speedo gauge and blowing some air (use a small compressor?) back thru the line. That should pinpoint the pickup hole in the front of your outdrive and clean out any gunk/debris that is likely blocking it.

As for the tach, it sound like a bit of corrosion at one of the connections. I would suggest removing each, cleaning them then re-attaching. Also, spin the small dial on the back of the tach a few times then re-set it at "8 cyl" when you are done. Sometimes a bit of corrosion there causes the problem you mention.

I would do both of the above then see how it works before i'd consider pulling each gauge & sending them back to Faria.

Thank you for the information. I will try what you suggested before I pull the guages.

On the speedo, where on the outdrive is the pickup?

On the tach, clean the consacts on the back of the guage itself? Is there anything on the motor end to look at?

The speedo pickup is just above the cavitation plate on the front of the outdrive. Have a look at this post by WetWilly to see what i'm talking about. If you use the air compressor as i suggested, the pickup point on the outdrive will be obvious...

As for the tach connections yes. It could be as simple as giving that little dial a spin & re-setting it or removing each wire connection, cleaning it and re-attaching them. A spot of corrosion is the usual cause.

So, no real troubleshooting on the trip meter paddle wheel, just replace it?
