Default Shift cable problems

I have been having some issues with my shift cable lately. Every now and again the boat will not start (do anthing..crank..etc.) I usually just mess around with the throttle while turning the key and it starts. Those days are now gone. I tried thirty minutes to get it to crank but no luck. THe throttle clicks like it is in neutral but obviously the foot is not because it won't start thinking it is still in gear. Sounds like shift cable from the motor to the foot. Sound right? Quoted about 40 bucks for cable and an hour or two of labor. Thanks

I would replace this cable as soon as you can. Two weeks ago I was pulling into the marina and
saw a 26 foot boat parked on top of the dock, I asked what happen, the owner said he was backing out of the dock, went to bump into forward to slow down when the cable broke. Before
he knew what happen he was on the dock. Nobody was hurt, just scared. Also the Water Patrol
said this is not that uncommon. Just think if anybody would have been on the dock, there is usually
allot of people on this dock. I had my bellows replaced this year and my mechanic recommended
replacing the shift cable at this time because the cable can be stretched when removing the old
    bellow causing shift trouble latter.
