Default 1998 Z210 Shabah with a frozen outdrive.

Hi,

I am recently new to this club and I am a proud owner of an original Mariah boat. I have a 1998 Z210 Shabah with a 5.7 Alpha one Merc. The problem is that the boat has been sitting garaged for 5yrs, and my son was playing in the boat. The outdrive is trimed to the "up" position and is now frozen there. I realize that a certified marine mechanic will have to fix it, but was wondering if anyone had any idea what it will entail?

Thank you in advance.

Check your fuses but FIRST the easy" reset" buttons under the cockpit. My guess is that a child pushed the toggle to raise the drive and held it there after it already had reached the maximum end of it's travel, the circuit overheated and the pop out circuit protector popped out. Just like it is supposed too.

Thank you for your response. I will definitely check the reset, but I think that because the drive was stored in the "up" position for the winter, the weight of the lower unit somehow caused it freeze. When I tried to lower the drive, it blew the circuit.

Hi msmith68, although Mercruiser recommends leaving the outdrive in the down position, I have stored our old Alpha drive in the upright position for the last 20+ years without any problems with sticking. If you believe this to be the case though, you might want to shoot a little WD40 or light oil on the ram shafts to help free them.

I was wondering if the circuit blew immediately or did the trim motor run for a short while and if it did run, did it sound like it was bogging down or did it just stall?

The circuit blew immediately......I will definitely use the WD40. Thank you. Should I have someone help me and apply a little pressure to the outdrive when I push the trim down button?

Seeing that you said the circuit "blew immediately", I'm wondering if your trim pump is frozen or if you have a direct short in the trim wiring.

The trim system is hydraulic, so the trim pump should have ran regardless of the outdrive being "frozen". If anything, the pump should have run until excess pressure put too much of a load on the wiring blowing the circuit.
