Hey guys,
This was the first winter I had my boat, and with the weather getting to the 80's this weekend, I really want to take it out. I am afraid though that we could get another freeze yet this spring. If I take it out, is there anything I can do to protect the block and out drive?

You can always drain the block if there's a threat of a deep freeze, but I don't think we'll see anything cold enough this spring. It needs to get down to about 26 degrees for a number of hours to harm anything. After 83 degrees today, it's hard to imagine another deep freeze. If it does - just ask how to drain it at that time (I'm sure we'll all be on this site wishing it were warmer outside). It's easy - 4 or 5 drain plugs (depending on engine and year) and your set.

There's always the 60w light bulb trick too. Not recommended, but it will save you if by some chance, we get a deep freeze. If you get the boat out and run it for a considerable amount of time, it'll heat the block up enough to keep it from freezing, provided you pull the drain plugs if temps start to get that low again, Honestly I think we're about done with the bitter cold weather around here.

The drive will be fine if you lower it to make sure all the water drains out. Like Indy says it'll take a long cold snap to get to any water in the block. I've heard people use a trouble light in the engine bay as a little insurance on those nights that might get below freezing.

I wouldn't be afraid of using the trouble light method, if it meant the block didn't crack. Most of the trouble lights I have are on little circuit breakers anyway. Good idea

I've heard that a general rule to go by is, if it's 24 degrees for 24 hours then you're in trouble.
