Default Air Temp Sensor

H e l l o fellow captains....

For those of you that have the Mark IV instrument package with an air/water temp indicator, does anyone know specifically where the air sensor is? I believe it's behind the instrument cluster, but don't know exactly where.

Would appreciate any insight.

Goin on a bit of a limb here ..

If its an air/water sensor, would it not just be located somewhere engine side?
(Im not a marine mechanic, so dont take my words for this)

But if there would be a air/water temp sensor readout on the dash, the water sensor would probably be inline with water cooling inlet lines and somewhere along the air breather tubes or possibly intake manifolds for the air temp?

I'am just trying to think about the automotive comparison, the intake air temp sensor is most times located on the inlet duct coming off intake to the air cleaner assembly and the coolant temp sensors are usually located in or around the T-stat housing adapters.

If it doubt, grab an OE manual or one of those Seloc manuals. OE would be more precise however.

I"M thinking it would be somewhere in the dash. I don't think Randy is talking about any sort of sensor related to engine management electronics; rather the sensor for ambient air temp...a thermometer I guess...

I have no idea where that sensor is.....

I also have touble with my air temp. It reads about 10 to 15 degrees to high. I have not been able to find the sensor either.

The ambient air temp reading is correct when I first start the boat. When the sun is out and I'm going slow, the temp increases slowly until it reads about 10 degrees high after the dash cavity warms up. If I go fast for a while, it'll cool down a bit (slowly)... but it still reads high. As an experiment I opened the 'back' cushon in front of the dash (open bow)... the one that allows access to the back of the instrument panel. With it open, the temp stays pretty constant as the airflow is able to get to the sensor. I plan to locate (and then relocate) the sensor when I get some time so that the temperature swing is eliminated, or at least reduced. I'll let everyone know what I find out.

As far as the accuracy of the air/temp readout, the offset adjustment for your air/water temp display is a potentiometer located on the circuit card assy (CCA) behind the console. It's on the same CCA as the 2 numeric LEDs. You'll have to pull your console out enough to gain access to it while leaving the wiring connected. You may have to remove the radio/tape/CD player and maybe the tape/cd holders, not sure. It's been about 4 years since I calibrated mine, but if I remember right, the adjustment is on the front of the CCA (same side as the numeric LEDs.) If so, you'll need to remove the screws that hold the CCA to the rear side of the console. Once you get to it, you simply adjust the temp reading with a small flat head screwdriver. Once set, just reassemble.

Perhaps you've seen it too, but my temp indication drifts as the circuit warms up. (This is independent of the drift explained in the 1st paragraph). If I recall correctly, it drifted about 3-5 degrees, upwards. Because of this, I calibrated the temperature reading immediately (within a minute or so) after flipping the air/water temp switch... before it had a chance to warm up. This is the way I use the gage too, I just flip it on long enough to get a reading then turn it off.

FYI - The water temp sensor is located on the lower portion of the transom in the device that has a paddle wheel that feeds the Mark IV distance measuring function.
