That seems like a really long time. I would think 5.0l in a boat that size should plane in about a tenth of that time. So when you have the throttle wide open, what RPM is the engine at?

My initial thought would be a prop issue. The hub slipping or something.

I put my outdrive all the way down first.

Put the hammer down (throttle at WOT) and start trimming up the outdrive slowly, but a split second after coming out of the hole so the bow doesn't start plowing.

As jimshabbah suggested, it could be the prop.

Boatman - On your engine there should be a metal tag that will show your engine's WOT RPM range. I would think 4800 is probably in that range. With a 5 blade prop you will lose some top-end speed. Factor in a 19P and the speed you mentioned seems a little low, but not necessarily too far off. Keep in mind, the speedo on the boat is usually off a little anyway.

With that being said, the advantage to a 5 blade 19P prop would be the hole shot. I would say there is a problem somewhere if it is taking that long to plane.

My first suspect would be the hub in the prop (assuming alpha drive).
This would also probably be the cheapest problem to fix.

If everything checks out mechanically on the boat, you might look into smart tabs. There are a lot of discussions on this site regarding them and people with your size boat seem to have a lot of success with their hole shot.

Maybe ask the PO why the engine and drive were replaced and if this was the type of performance he experienced before the repairs.

I agree with jimshabbah. I just put a 21P high 5 on my Barchetta 182. It jumps out of the water. I would pull the prop off and check the hub for slipage.
