ECU scan software for free

As I mentioned a few months ago, I bought an ECU scanner program for pc from OBDDiagnostics called MEFIscan3/ScannerPro. I am not very happy with the performance of the package and have started writing my own software. I am experienced with this and have done some applications before for cars. This application will be almost identical to ones I have done before, so no surprises here. It make take a few weeks or months to get it done to a good usable level. But if anyone is interested, I will be giving it away for free via a download, as I have done for previous automotive programs. The cable that came with the kit can be duplicated for $20 for a basic cable and about $10 for the 10-pin connector required for the boat. You would just have to solder it to the cable. The use of a Windows PC nearby, preferably a laptop or notebook, would be required also.

Let me know if anyone is interested in using it. This would only work for the MEFI-3 ECU modules. The part numbers on the MEFI-3 ECU, as far as I know, would be 16236999, 12489488, or 12489493.

There will be no advertising, nag screens, or any strings attached with the use of this software. If you want to see what I have done before, just do an internet search for Scan9495.

Well, if nobody wants a copy, then I will take my time with it.

Gary,
I would be real interested in your software but unfortunately I have the MEFI2 on my 7.4MPI engine. It is a very generous offer of your time and talent.

My scan program is ready to use and can be found here: https://www.mediafire.com/folder/57e...f51/MEFI3-Scan

In the same folder are also instructions in a readme file, some screen shots, a photo of the location of the scanner connection, and for those who would prefer to use something more well-known, there is an adx definition file for use with TunerProRT (also free). The readings on the screen shots may look odd, because the ecu was not connected to anything but a power supply at the time.

These will only work for the MEFI-3 module. If anyone has a ".adx" definition file for the MEFI-1, MEFI-2, or MEFI-4, I would appreciate a copy of the file.

Update:

In a few days I will have a scan version for the MEFI-4. A kind soul on the Malibu boat web site is beta testing it for me now. It's going very well.

I also have definitions for the MEFI-1 and MEFI-2. So if someone with either of those wants to do some testing, we can make that a reality also. I noticed Steve seemed to be interested (?).

I think it's pretty good software even if I say so myself ;-) And the price is good, free.

Steve,

First you will need a Windows Vista, 7, 8 or 10 pc close to the engine; laptop, notebook or tablet are best.
Second you will need a cable fro the pc to the diagnostic connector on the engine, it is a 10pin 'Opel" connector usually fastened near the ECM. There are no pre-made cables at a reasonable price, so you will have to make one.

Here are the parts:
Connector: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/829-12045808
Pins for connector (2 minimum): https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/829-12045773
Cable: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail...DpPMdam%2fwe00

Cut off 6-pin connector (NOT USB end !) from FTDI cable

Connect black wire to pin A (ground) of the 10-pin “Opel” connector. I recommend soldering the wires.

Update: you will need a small diode to add inline to the orange wire, Put the cathode end of the diode toward the end with the USB connector. See a later post for a photo.

Connect yellow and orange wires to pin G (data) of the 10-pin “Opel” connector
(These need to be the wires from the TXD and RXD terminals on the USB end. Some cables use white and green instead. You may be able to pry off the cover at the USB end to see them)

You do not need all the strain relief and water seals for this connector.

Once you have the cable made, I may be ready with the trial version. You can try it on the engine with the ignition on but engine not running. Later, after the program is farther along, you would need to run it with the engine running. The boat does not have to be in the water. In all cases, I will need you to send me the log file(s). We can communicate via email directly if you prefer.

This version of my program will be free to use with no annoying nag screens, advertisements or other encumbrances. But the pc you use to get this program must be able to allow downloads of an exe file.

In the attached diagram, do not connect pins A and B as shown. That is only used to initiate trouble code flashing and cannot be done while scanning normally.

Thanks

Gary

Four downloads and nobody has any feedback about whether it works for you or not?

Gary,

My cable is ready. Have you had a chance to work on the program? Let me know next steps.
