Hi Craig,
Welcome aboard. If you do a search on this forum you'll find several posts dealing with faulty rev counters. For future reference, we here in the states call them tachometers or tach for short.
Anyway, if you can get access to the back of the rev counter you will find a small dial or set screw. It should be currently set to the 6cyl position for your engine. The contacts for this dial commonly get corroded, so turn the dial or set screw back and forth several times to clean off the contacts and return it back to the 6cyl setting. Try this and let us know if it works.
