For whatever reason the mechanic who installed your engine included two ignition coils. The round coil that was loose is from an early model while the squarish module that is actually attached to the distributor is from a later model. You definitely don't need both coils! I would bring your boat to good mechanic ASAP and have him clean up the wiring. Any mechanic who uses wire nuts and leaves an extra ignition coil in place probably took a bunch of other short cuts that will also require attention.

I believe its guys like hudson river steve and brian and mikey t who make these forums a worthwhile donation to become a contributing member. Its hard to give back all this knowledge they take time to share, this is why i became a contributing member, not because i have all the knowledge but i feel ive taken a lot from this site, and feel its a way of giving back. Probably a non-issue at this point - I'm pretty sure the engine seized up on me on the water today. It stopped responding to throttle snappily so I turned it around and head back towards the ramp and about 15 seconds later the engine stopped and it did not sound pretty. After that it wouldn't crank at all. Oil is fine, temp was 175 (if the gauge is to be trusted). Didn't smell too hot. No idea what happened but knowing the guys who installed it I'm not too surprised.
